| China is the homeland of tea, and a tea culture that
goes back thousands of years. Enjoying tea is a social,
spiritual and cultural experience.
Legend has it that the traits of tea are said to have been
first discovered by the Second Emperor, Shen Nung (Divine
Healer) who reigned between 2737- 2697 B.C. He also discovered
millet, medicinal herbs, and invented the plough. The trading
of tea was first mentioned in 1066 B.C. when officials from
Yunnan Province sent some tribute tea to the emperor. It
is thought that the origins of the Camellia Sinensis plant
(tea) are from this southern part of China.
Legend also has it that the first people that cultivated
tea were Buddhist monks. It may have been to allow them
to stay alert during their meditation. About 1200 years
ago the first book on tea Cha Ching (circa 780 AD) was written
by the Chinese author Lu Yu. It is comprised of three volumes
and covers tea from its growth through to its making and
drinking.
