The liver is responsible for the harmony of bodily Qi. It also harmonises the emotions. When Qi activities are normal in the body, a free flow of Qi and blood exists. This produces a relaxed mind and high-spirited emotions. If there is a blockage or disharmony with the Qi flow, it will negatively affect a person’s emotional state.

qiIf there is stagnation produced by a hyperactivity of liver Qi, it may lead to anger related behaviour such as explosive outbursts, impatience, insomnia, frustration, resentment, arrogance and mood swings. If anger is chronic, Fire will result in the Liver and will transfer to the Heart.

If the harmony (free-flow) of liver Qi is compromised, it will influence the dynamics of other organ networks, particularly the digestive function of the spleen and stomach (upwards and downwards Qi flow) and the excretion of bile into the intestines, leading to the pathological symptoms of jaundice, diarrhoea and bitter taste.

The liver helps maintain tendon health and flexibility. It stores blood during periods of rest and in times of activity releases it to the tendons. Tendon strengthening exercises within the internal martial arts system (i.e. Qi Gong and Nei Gong) are extremely beneficial to maintaining healthy, flexible tendon control and a healthy lustre reflected in the nails.

The liver meridian branches out to the eyes (opening) and can serve as an indication for both eyesight and liver function.

With male physiology based mainly on Qi (yang) and female physiology based on blood (yin), liver function has a great importance over menstruation. Males tend to have an abundance of Qi that can be used up freely while females have an abundance of blood that is given away freely (menstruation).
