The stomach is responsible for receiving food and drink (via the mouth and oesophagus) and the spleen is responsible for the transformation and distribution of food essence and fluids. A healthy spleen will facilitate the optimal absorption and distribution of refined essences, resulting in the entire body being provided with nutrients essential for survival and wellbeing. When our spleen and stomach is in balance we have greater capacity to concentrate. Our intentions are positive and focussed.
There are two kinds of Qi; one you inherit from your parents (pre-heaven Qi) that is stored in the kidneys and the other is generated largely by the spleen and stomach via digestion (post-heaven Qi). When there is disharmony in the spleen and stomach the body doesn’t receive adequate nourishment for energy. If there is not enough post-heaven Qi to meet daily needs then the energy is taken from the pre-heaven Qi that has only a prescribed limited amount.
Once the food enters the stomach its essential energy travels upward to be infused firstly into the spleen and then the lungs. Once the upward movement reaches its peak the direction changes and moves towards the bladder.
The spleen and stomach’s ability to transform the optimum essence from food (and drink) and distribute to its proper place in the body is reliant on fire and water. When fire is excessive the spleen and stomach will be dry. When water is excessive the spleen and stomach will be damp (like heavy late summer rain). Either of these two disharmonies will bring with it much dis-ease.
Disharmonious spleen and stomach Qi causes digestive problems, diarrhoea, fluid retention, lethargy, bloating, allergies, poor memory, varicose veins, loss of appetite, weight gain (or malnutrition) and mucus as we approach autumn.
